I have two pairs of SPD shoes that I use on both road and trail. One pair is a low cost Shimano with velcro the other is low cost Giro with laces. Not sure what the model numbers are but I paid less than $70 each.

I hate them both. I'm going to stay with SPD for all of my bikes but I think I'm going to shop for a pair that is a little more comfortable. I usually wear the Shimano and I have spent a lot of time with a shoe stretcher and heat gun trying to get a more comfortable fit and I have improved it some. But still wearing them is as close to self-inflicted torture as one can get. The next pair I get will prolly be a lot more expensive and I will not rush the decision on what pair to get.
