In fairness to my post above, I have not had MANY failures to unclip. Most were at the start of my using clipless pedals. I had (still have) Shimano PD-9020 XTR clipless pedals set on full loose, with SH-56 multi-release cleats. I liked them, but a FTU last fall and the general need to get all shoe'ed up to do test rides was getting old. I rode clips and straps for 40+ years, both with and without old school cleats. Reaching down to loosen a strap or to run with them (usually just the right side) loose was second nature. Plus I wanted to be able to wear stiff soled hiking shoes/mids, sneakers, or flat bike shoes.

I do not feel SPD clipless is unsafe (for me). I just feel more comfortable with the straps which also gave more flexibility (the main goal). If I had been smart, I would have spent for the MKS Rinko EZY-Superior Sylvan Touring Next QR pedals AND the MKS Clipless pedals to facilitate easier back and forth swapping, but the XTRs were a nicer clipless pedal, so I held off.

And then I do confess there is a personal attraction with the retro/vintage aspect which matches the steel framed bike with silver components, Brooks saddle, cantilever brakes and vintage rider.
