I have never seriously touched a mountain bike before. Aside from an old beater I used as a bad weather commuter some years ago, I have never really ridden one. I have always primarily been a road rider, but a friend of mine has convinced me to get into off road racing this season.

I read the FAQ, and it was quite helpful in terms of forks and components. However, I was wondering if someone could let me know a good place to look for deals on a frames, and what companies are traditionally considered reputable? I would probably end up building this bike up myself.

Finally, I am somewhat tempted to start off by building up a SS bike. Is there any opinion as to whether or not this is stupid for your only mountain bike that you intend to race on?
