The case was very public at the time, and lead to much antagonizing. In the Soviet and later also Russian rhetoric the only WWII war criminals were Nazis and their collaborants, and trying a decorated Soviet war veteran for crimes agianst humanity was unheard of - even unthinkable just ten years prior.

That's a great job on the mission, but I'd feel really weird "liking" such an awful story.
