Might just need adjusting. Sometimes the cable slips in the hold fast on the DR.
Might just need a new cable. Sometimes frayed up in the shifter and that mucks things up.

Shifter might indeed be ruined. I'd explore the $5.00 cable before replacing what is probably one of the most expensive components on your bike.
