I'm not sure what you mean by "ratio spacing", but Shimano compatible cassettes are available in a much wider range than Campy compatible cassettes. And I'd think just rigging up the ShiftMate would be a lot less hassle and expense than messing with his rear hub. Would be less permanent too.
