Polishing raw steel on a fork

A few years ago I purchased a replacement tange fork that is chromed 3/4 up the fork blades. However, the crown and the top portion of the fork blades were left untouched steel. I suppose it must be some leftover fork from a factory's storeroom that found its way on ebay?

Anyways, I've been thinking it might be nice to paint the plain steel part of the fork. But, it got me wondering about the feasibility of polishing the steel on crown/fork tangs to a nice shine and then spraying it with clear coat to try to emulate a chromed fork crown.

Has anyone here had any experience polishing steel? Would the end result look like chrome or would it clash and look weird considering real chrome is right next to it?
