Disk break insanity please help.

Hi all

I got 6 year old Carrera vengeance bikes with mechanical disk breaks. The breaks are the last stock item on the bikes as I have kept them maintained. Tekro 160mm rotor breaks.

I however cannot achieve any lock on the breaks at either end. I cannot endo or skid on the things. So I swapped them out for Clarke's 160mm rotors and capiliers (£20) but other than more slow down power again I cannot achieve lock up on either end.
slow down power has always been fine.

Would hydraulic breaks be better? Say around the £60 zone. And larger rotors?

I know the bikes are cheap kids muck to alot but they are rugged and light weight. We are only doing about 10miles a day (100 miles a week at most) on them as the little one can ride 2 wheels but wants more time on trails. It would be nice if his old man can show him how to swing the back end around while rolling forwards.

Any help with existing or recommendations on what I should do is greatly appreciated.

Old man who can
