Width is less critical than wheel diameter. You should be able to fit tyres from 1.75" to 2.5" on your rims. Wider ones might run on your frame. Wider ones might also roll off your rims if your rims are narrow. Narrower tyres might be more likely to snake bite if you're running tubes.
