I would say aim a bit higher for project bikes there are lots of older ones in need of work out there. I would say pass on anything that doesn't have a nicer crank decent looking alloy wheels and LX or better components.
Beggars, as they say, can't be choosers. My local CL is largely filled with high end mtb., beat up BMX, and big box junkers. Then there's the decent-looking Bridgestone MB-5, the rusty Univega mixte, and the probably junk but maybe not Shogun Trail Breaker. Not looking to make a profit, that's not possible; just looking to rescue some decent bikes for people who need them. And I'm not even doing that, because I'm not a mechanic. {sigh} I'm probably just bored and need to go ride my bike.

And yes, the Harry beast is napping beside me.
