I'm only slightly embarrassed to say I like the current color as it is. If it was my bike I'd go for a similar but darker shade of plum purple, or a 70s lime/gold metallic color. I like orange bikes too, but I think with all that fancy chrome bling, the paint needs a bit more flash to keep up. I could see metallic orange though. Are you going to keep the contrast panel? Are the socks going to get rechromed or painted over?
The true color IS more of a plum purple. Between the camera, lighting, and the monitor, colors get messed with. Socks will need to be redone and likely the crown as there are signs of the chrome beginning to fail.
What's wrong with the ds chain stay?

Those obnoxious gold Mafac Competions that were popular in the late 70s to very early 80s might be an option.
I have a later Carré that is mostly Mavic. What you and Steve Sumner describe is likely with variation. I thought of Simplex and Mafac gold, but I have Lejeunes already rocking that. I will have plenty of time to figure it out. Jack does not work fast, which is fine with me. I have been looking for Abel Borne markings, but they are not to be found. Gus Salmon would likely do them, but I would need an example for him to use.
