My understanding is Suntour and Shimano are not compatible but I was wondering if that is only for the rear derailleur.

Thank you.
FWIW, I recently went the opposite way, swapping a Shimano Deore triple crankset for a Suntour XC Pro triple on a road bike with Shimano 105 STI brifters. FD shifts well up and down the chainrings but I have some chain rub in the lowest gears that can't be fixed by adjusting the limit screws due to the FD hitting the seatube indicating a longer BB spindle is needed.
