In your opinion, what PSI rating are you looking for in a hybrid tire, for maximum speed on pavement (minimal riding on groomed gravel trails)? I'm looking at a Kenda K-198 700 35 rated for 50-85 PSI. Is that typical of a hybrid tire? Would you ever go thinner, to a 28?
I'm also trying to set my hybrid up for a more aggressive riding position (it is a city/cross bike) with longer stem (40mm to 90mm). I'm moving from a 660mm bar width to a 600mm. Do you feel that will give me more speed?
The optimal tire pressure for the same tire size can vary a lot depending on rider+bike weight, riding surface and the tire construction (suppleness) itself, so there is no single definitive answer. I use 700×38C tires, total weight about 220 lbs, and usually pump them up somewhere in the 50-60 psi range. I personally wouldn't go thinner than 35mm, but I ride quite a lot of gravel and other off-road surfaces. I suppose if you're looking for maximum speed on pavement, 28-32mm might suit you.
Regarding the riding position, one that takes your torso lower and hands closer together will be more aero and can definitely help with speed, however, if it's uncomfortable for you, you won't be able to hold it for long. Just try it out and see how it feels; the body might take a while to get used to it.
