I've considered that perspective as well. I knew for years I had thyroid problems, but didn't realize it had become cancerous. I neglected my own health for years while I was my mom's caregiver (she had Alzheimer's and other physical disabilities). The injury and cancer diagnosis finally motivated me to register with the VA for health care. They've been terrific for me in this area, Texas, although I understand in some regions the VA has been less satisfactory for some folks.
