I had a similar experience many years ago. I drove many hours thru driving rain to a 24 hour race. Pulled the bike off the rack and the headset was completely toast. I happened to have a Chris King headset in the toolbox. I banged it in with blocks of wood and a hammer. ~10 years later, the headset is still running smoothly (for a different owner).

I'm doing pretty much the same thing.
My CK will arrive in a box in a few days.
Only I don't think I'm going to use a block of wood and hammer.
