...personally, I rough the chrome a little bit, mask off the fork ends and crown (depending on condition of the chrome there), and paint to match the frame paint. Nobody seems to notice much once it's painted. Here's a before and after of one where the fork and stays had chrome socks, where the chrome was badly corroded. It's good enough for me. The whole chrome fork thing was kind of a labor saving device anyway, IMO. You can put a chrome fork on anything without painting it to match.

And a decently primed and painted fork, finish coated in clear urethane paint, will outlast many, if not all Italian chromed forks.
