Indeed, I've got velcro instead of laces and I just barely snug them up, not tight in any sense, except that they stay on my feet. That, a custom insole, and a 2 degree cleat wedge removed all the foot pain and numbness of my left, outer toes.

Before, they would get numb after about 10 miles or so; now, not at all over any distance I ride.
