The only solvent I have in my garage stronger than acetone is methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). It can turn paint tacky just by contact. I'm not sure if it would work well cleaning goo off rims without causing some damage to the finish.
MEK is great but, as you know, be careful with it. It will literally "weld" certain plastics together. I use it for certain vintage fountain pen repairs. Agreed, stronger than acetone. Not sure what it would do on aluminum...probably instant death for carbon, but IDK.
