There are two main types (there are more than 2, but these are the usual) of valve stems for bike tubes. Schrader (looks just like on your car), or Presta-which is smaller and has a core which must be loosened and "burped" before pumping up the tube. The pump must have the correct head to work with whatever is on the bike.
