We use a pair of bluetooth capable walkie talkies (ones from Cobra) and bone-conductor headset (which also provides, directions andmusic since they can connect and switch from more than one device). The walkie talkies were super cheap- around $30 a pair off ebay, have voice activation, decent range (over a mile at least on the roads and in the woods) and are quite clear.
