Loss of a spouse is a major risk factor for vascular disease and probably also for Alzheimer-type dementia. Unsurprisingly, an immune/inflammatory mechanism is suspected.
My dad swore he would stop eating if Mom went first. And he had a living will preventing force-feeding. Thankfully he went first.
