Did my Trek deale screw me?
I am in the process of contacting Trek because of my local dealer and what I perceive to be some shady dealings. Here is what happened, please give youe opinions. This whole thing took place last month.
I go into my Trek dealer, which is one of the 3 biggest dealers in Canada. They know me fairly well. I tell them that I have an old 5200 (I think thats the model-no stickers), that has become unbonded at the BB, as it is a carbon Aluminum lugged frameset. I tell them I AM NOT the original owner, butI have heard that out of goodwill and good customer service TREK may fix it for free or offer some sort of credit to me. No harm in asking right? I have not been dishonest. So they say to me, "We can make anything happen, if there is something in it for us".
So I leave and come back a few days later with the frame. I remind the mechanic about what he said, and ask him how much money would they want and what would I get. He says we'll have to call Trek and see. Leave it with me.
The next day, I return. He says they talked to Trek, if I can dig up the original receipt I will probably get a new frame, if not I am out of luck. I repeated to him, I AM NOT THE OROGINAL OWNER, so I cannot get the receipt. I thought if something was in it for you guys "you could make anything happen?". He denys saying that. So He says he will talk to Trek again, and see if he can get me a credit. Now I am thinking something is up, or this guy is an idiot.
I come back a couple of days later and they say Trek is interested in buying the frame from me too investigate what went wrong with it. (Remember it came unglued.....Trek hasn't seen this before???). Trek will allow the store to give me a $200 credit fot ANYTHING in the store. I make him repeat ANYTHING, not just a Trek product. So a couple of days later I return for a price on a Record Groupo for my other bike that I had also been asking about. I also see a pair of bibs that I want. I take the bibs to the counter and I am intrecepted by the mechanic/salesman, I tell him I am going to use my credit for these bib shorts. He says no way, the credit was toward the Record group, and nothing else. We had never even mentioned that, EVER. I am also sure TREK would not have put that kind of stipulation on a customer who reurned some product.
So I finally say to him "what if I don't want to buy the RECORD stuff, I am S.O.L. right? you guys already took my frame, I have nothing." He shrugs his shoulders and smiles. I leave and have not returned. By the way the owner was involved in this too.
I believe these scammers have taken my frame, reurned it to Trek for credit, possibly a new frame, as they probably told them they had seen a receipt, and a giving me nothing. Doing some research I have found that this dealer has made a lot of enemies in town, and has screwed lots of racers.
Should I write to TREK? and give them every detail? including names and dates? Thanks
