IIRC have seen very early Columbus water slide decals and later dry transfer. I don't know what the factory did but I get blue tape perfectly placed both vertically and horizontally and only then get anyones decal, dry or water, any where near the frame.
In the past, with vinyl, I've had good luck using a slightly soapy water solution to "float" the decals into proper alignment. You're saying that won't work here? That's my main concern, I suppose, because I've found vinyl decals actually very forgiving if you apply them wet. But that's also exactly what I'm afraid of doing with these old ones.
