"Direct mount" refers to low profile caliper brakes that attach to specific frame and fork mounting points. They are primarily used on TT or Tri bikes. They've been around for just a few years and are now being replaced by discs. Though canti and V brakes are also attached on both sides they aren't referred to as "direct mount" brakes.
