1 1/8" steerers will fit in all sorts of head tubes with an adapter headset. What size is your head tube and what size is your fork steerer?

It is still pretty common for bikes to have a 44mm head tube that nominally fits a 1.5" steerer, but come with a 1 1/8" steerer fork.
