The idea of needing a protein drink after a ride is probably promulgated by pros needing something convenient to get needed nutrients, since post-race stages often have a lengthy transfer process before they can eat a real meal. Dylan Johnson has a video where he points to the results of a misleading study that seems to be the origin to the widely accepted idea that a certain ratio of protein to carb is needed to maximize gains.
