I just do the squat-live-for-free (parasite or Freedom Fighter ) thing and neither rent nor buy, i do i feel both could be horrid or good depending on circumstance. Next stop: Owner build sustainable home in Spain, or so i hope and work towards.

+1 to A. Do you what you love for a living and in life, as long as you are happy and coping, it is fine. Forget the prestige, 'stability', 'nice' job, nice 'car' rat race. If it makes you miserable then you can opt out without being 'poor' as such. Poor mental or physical health are much more objectionable than a low(er) income.

@ CTAC, i do think it is good you are responsible and providing for the ones you love, but some of your statements do seem like they could indicate self pity as well as congratulating yourself and judging others by your standards. Maybe the OP doesn't want to provide for himself and 1 to 5 others, maybe he doesn't want kids and a dependancy situation. Maybe he feels that even if he did he would not do them much good if the severe stress at work gave him a heartattack at some point .. I guess that is what a 'good' life insurance is for but i'll pass thank you.
