Does anyone know why Boulder, CO doesn't have any really great trails within riding distance from town? I know there are some up by nederland and walker ranch, but thats not really close enough to ride to when you've got a short afternoon. There are so many great hills everywhere, it seems like they could set up something really excellent just for mountain bikers...they have all those trails for hikers.

one word: NIMBY's.
i'm about a 15 minutes north of boulder. yeah, not much you can ride to. but really, not a lot of places have good trail that is able to be ridden to within, say 5 miles. the stuff that is that close to bolder is pretty tame. good stuff=have to drive to it. yes, it sucks.
a sh#tload of good stuff around, but you have to be willing to drive. i've got some very excellent nat. forest stuff that i hit alot, and can get to some of those trails in slightly more than half an hour.
BCOS is not good about new trails or having existing trails be fun/technical for bikes. we mtb folks are outnumbered by the equestrian/hiker/pave the trails types in boulder who are the lion's share of BCOS tax revenue........
