The shoes with rubber on them are mountain bike shoes. These are good for walking around on and can be quite stiff. The shoe that has hard plastic and is shiny is a road shoe and is not recommended for walking around on. However, I use a shimano mtb. clipless pedal on my road bike because I find they are easier to get in and out of. The pedals are easy to get in and out of and you can also move side to side without taking your foot out of the pedal. Some riders complain of sore knees because there pedals are not adjusted properly or have no float and after many pedal strokes that is hard on the knees. Give yourself a couple of days to learn how to use the clipless pedals. You have probaly heard of falling down while learning to get in and out of the pedals while that is true. I fell down several times on a small back street than thought I would try something more soothing like grass and that had the same results. OuCH! I put the pedals away for quite awhile and then in the past 6 months my boyfriend showed me Shimano clipless pedals and they are great.
