That's a pretty good idea actually to wear something really bright on those group rides. Really difficult to do though when everyone is wearing the same kit though! The higher end gear is supposed to improve performance by making you lighter and more areo and hence, faster but I sure don't feel it when I'm climbing a 10% grade incline. I think I would need an eBike to help with that.
