IIRC 9 speed has the same pull ratio as 8 speed, so you could get a modern Sora. Somewhat better construction, just leave an extra click at the high end.
8 and 9 speed derailleurs have the same “ratio”, but the shifters pull different amounts of cable. A 9 speed shifter won’t work with an 8 speed cassette.
