I live about 4 mi. from work and rarely drive, but require an all-weather, 24 hr, way to get there for emergencies and the boat is 40 mi. away, so we're stuck.
Mazda 3s are great cars. We bought our son one when he got his license. Two years ago he got rear-ended by a pickup and it totaled the car. We gave him the option of getting something different, but he wanted one just like the one he lost, same color even. He loves the thing.
I'm not as familiar with the Element, but you can't beat a Honda.
Between my wife and I, we put about 20-25k miles per year on our cars.
