Specing it with new materials (wheels and tires are the biggest bang for your buck performance change) can do wonders. I personally still like Thompson stems and seat posts for my bikes, but there is nothing wrong with adding carbon seatpost and cockpit to reduce weight as well. You can get quite a light frame by doing all of that, and have a ton fun.
I'm in the process of getting the Allez setup with a SRAM 1x11 drivetrain right now. Have a set of 50mm carbon wheels I may throw on it, but I really like the look of the Roval SL 25s I have also. We'll see.
