Maybe John's double-negative sentence structure is causing confusion? The progression as I see it goes like this, paraphrased:
Q. Isn't '84 late for portacatena? Think it's in the catalog?
A1: Here's an '84 catalog photo that shows the portacatena drilling.
A2: From JT: Every one of those dropouts I brazed at Trek had portacatena drilling. ("I don't recall any without the portacatena drilling." = none without = they _all_ had portacatena drilling)
= Dropout is correct, despite date seeming late. Trek had shootloads of them.

Nope you’re right. I just went back and read his post and saw that he wrote “without” and not “with”. So it was me who was confused. But now I’m also wondering what elaboration
