I got halfway to the intake goal just by cutting out my daily after-work beer. The rest was just portion size control, especially with carbs. I was still able to eat all the things I enjoy, I just ate a little less of them, and never had craving issues. I've stagnated around 185 mostly because I relaxed a bit on the portion control. I'm slowly trying to get down to 180. My 2002-2004 race weight was 160-163. I have no interest in being that lean at this point in my life.
I went through similar measures, but I sure as hell didn't give up the beer!

That, IMO, is one of the nice things about counting both input and output - as long as your you're under for the day, it's not necessarily a matter of denying yourself the things that you like. I've found that, if I eat right otherwise, there's room for a daily 12oz beer even on days where I'm not particularly active.
