Not sure why you find it odd to have to turn off a device to save battery life. If you were travelling in area's with sketchy cell service, you set to airplane mode of turn off the phone completely to save on the battery ?.. Same thing with a GPS. Where's the device overnight when you are not riding ?, is there a clear signal to the satellites ?. If not and not powered off, the device will be searching for a satellite signal, that uses the battery.
