Going down a different but similar path so to speak, some of my hockey friends have played with young guys who played at an elite level but couldn't break the professional barrier so the next stage is recreational/beer league hockey. A lot of these guys are doing coke and all sorts of stuff before they play and are unbelievable athletes. Some of them have to get high to chill out, otherwise their intensity is way too high for recreational hockey and without it, they would be taking guys heads off.
