I absolutely adore bike shops that post their shop rates for their most common repairs/installations/tuneups. It really gives you peace of mind that the bike shop is not screwing you with their labour costs. I like to know that I paid the same that the last guy did, regardless of my/his appearance or demeanor. Whenever I'm talking price with a mechanic for labour I am constantly wondering if the mechanic is looking at me and thinking to himself, "I think I can get away with charging this (insert adjective here) guy (insert price here)." If shop space is so scarce that hanging a sign with prices above the repair area is not possible, consider making brochures for your shop that include all this information and put them in a prominent place. (For example: on a glass parts case, at the front door, on the checkout counter, near the shop area.... The list goes on.)
My ideal shop setup would be bikes along/on the side walls, a sales desk at the front near the door, accessories in the front middle, parts in the back middle, and a service area in the back. I like the idea of a shop in view that is separated by a low wall. Make the shop the entire back area of the shop and put a door in the low partition wall, instead of just a space in the wall with the usual caution tape where a dazed customer can walk right into the repair area. But that's just me and my ranting opinions.
