Wow. All kinds of extra-special nuggets in this issue. I poured over this edition when it came out. For me, the highlights are:
  • A touring article by Ed "Foxy Grandpa" Delano, a Davis CA local legend. (I'd love to see it, if possible).
  • TdF coverage and a PY-10 review from Owen Mulholland, whose seemingly simple prose always told the story in a way that made quite clear what had happened. He had a rare gift - I have some of the Kennedy Bros. Tour booklets from that era that feature great photos and impenetrable write-ups.
  • A review of the Windsor Pro from Wallace Clements (his son was a year or two behind me in high school).
  • That famous Windsor ad showing their sticker on the head tube of Eddy Merckx's uber-special purpose-built Colnago Hour Record bike. (Contrary to what Mr. Clemens reports, the word was that Ernesto Colnago had not been consulted and was furious about this.)
  • Some very familiar names in the Nationals reports - John Howard, Wayne Stetina, Miji Reoch, Sue Novarra, Ron Skarin and Jocelyn Lovell stand out. Oh, and Nicola Farac-Ban wearing the hat of his sponsoring bike shop. Within a couple of years, he managed to convince that shop to stop sponsoring the team and, as far as I know, never sponsoring one again. It's a funny tale, in a "what were you thinking" sort of way. Some of you must also know it - if it reached my very unconnected ears, every semi-serious cyclist in the Bay Area (and probably further afield than that) had to know about it.
I never met any of these people (although I bet repechage and some of the rest of you did). I was a young wannabe racer in 1975 who quickly developed into a never-was racer, but content-driven issues of Bicycling, Bike World, Velo News and (locally) Competitive Cycling made me feel like I knew them. Many thanks for the great trip down Memory Lane. If Bicycling still ran this kind of content, I'd still be buying and reading it.
