Aerobar installation question

Hello,

I just got a pair of Profile Jammer GT aerobars for my road bike. Installation seems pretty straightforward, except for one thing:

They come w/ a pair of shims for 26mm bars. The instructions say that if you have 31mm bars, not to use the shims. Does that mean I attach the metal clamps directly to the exposed metal of my handlebars? Won't this rub and scratch the finish on the bars (and/or the clamps)? I thought about using electrical tape, but I thought I'd throw the question out here first.

Also, where I want the bars is right where the cable comes out of the handlebar tape. Is it OK for the cable to go under the clamp (there's a gap there where the allen bolt is, so it's not being squeezed), or do I route it in front of everything?

Thanks!
