Definitely agree with you there. I own a couple of them now and have been soaking up whatever info I can find. Some of my confusion started when I would find the same year SJ but the frames had marked differences. So I think pictures and serial numbers of lots of SJs, side by side, would help us sort through some of the details.
The regular and sports cause some of the confusion and I think specs like you want were trade secrets at the time as they were making it up as they went along so may be hard to come by.
That chart from the museum is one of the best I have seen as many that know the years will talk about the parts they came with and these came with some very eclectic parts in the beginning and many cite that as both good and bad.
There is no registry for these so you will have dig a deep hole.
