Its a nut because of its hexagonal shape. And, as with a nut, you need a wrench/socket drive to loosen or tighten it. Pretty straightforward

Update. The Park.Tool 5.2 also works on.a thru-axle hub.
Then why doesn't PARK TOOL call it a nut?
Because EVERYBODY else calls it a tool.
