Chrome Paint as Basis for Cromovelato Finish?

I have an Atala Super Professional which is fully chromed. Unfortunately, the chrome is in sad shape. I've considered having the frame rechromed, but the reading I've done suggests that might not be the best idea. The frame has three green panels which always appeared to be hand-painted to me, and seem to be cromovelato:

Assuming I decide to have the frame stripped and painted, I wonder if using chrome paint would be a reasonable base for cromovelato. An old thread on VSalon discusses the options with a couple painters/framebuilders chiming in. randyjawa's old Atala Record Pro looks kind of like cromovelato to me (though perhaps not).

I worry that the lugs and socks won't look great exposed, though perhaps the rest of the painted bits will be okay. Anybody tried this before? Do you have any pictures?
