I use both chains somewhat interchangeably. The 971 has a shinier finish on the outer plates but the shaping is the same as far as I know. The on bike performance is the same. In theory the shinier finish might rust less quickly and/or wear a tiny bit better but I don't let my chains get that dry of lube or worn out to tell. Andy
