Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

I've used the tips of a small pair of needle nose pliers as a spanner to hold the nut's slots and keep it from turning while removing a chainring bolt.
