We had a pretty serious incident today in Kentucky. One of us went down due to a broken crank axel. His frame is a Cannondale with the rear derailuer cable run through the b.b.
Apparently the cable was rubbing on the crankset axel long enough to cut through it far enough that when he was climbing behind me, it snapped. The side with the rings came out of the b.b. and all his weight went to the other crankarm. The front wheel turned sideways and he went over the bars. Bearing in mind we were going 22-24 mph. No broken bones, some road rash on him and his bike. A local gentleman. We flagged down actually said without hesitation " absolutely, get in throw your bike in the back" brought him back to the hotel.
