There's just a push-button release on the lever, like the lower level Shimanos of the time. That button doesn't open the caliper as much as the cam release. That's one pet peeve I have about the Sante gruppo.
But it leaves the brakes looking much cleaner. And all I have to do is smack the top of the tire to get it to pop out, and lean on the bars to get it to pop in. But I have the same experience with 7400 DA dual pivots - have to use a little force to get 25s through.
