I might take your first idea and just set the chain on the middle ring but lose the front mech. Have to look at gear ratios and inches and whatnot of course. It's a winter bike that's going to get eaten by salt and I would like to stick that Alfine crank with the spare hub I have on an n+1 bike eventually . . .
