@ DD, a shame indeed! Hope it was a fluke/they fired their crappy riveter.

Yes the springs really do help quite a lot. But the question perhaps should be: do you need them for your kind of riding...?

Like to tour? Get springs (Flyer).
Do really rough terrain? Get springs.
Have a MTB just for cruising around town of short non off road use? B 17 is fine.
