My brother used to do orienteering, when he lived in North Carolina. Some of their events, soldiers from the nearby Army base would show up, certain that they'd win. They'd generally get humbled a bit, because it's not JUST reading a map and running through the woods.
Not many people are taught to do even that in the Army these days.
